Premchand Jagdeo
Premchand Jagdeo, affectionately known as Prem or Premchan, was born on June 2, 1952, in Gandhi Village, Debe, to Popo (Silochna) and Jagdeo. He was the younger brother of Trinidad and Tobago’s celebrated Indian artiste Sookdeo Jagdeo. Growing up in a family where music was cherished, Premchan developed a deep love for singing from a very young age. His earliest performances took place at the Radha Krishna Mandir in Gandhi Village, where his powerful and expressive voice quickly began captivating devotees and villagers. Encouraged by the warm response from audiences, he soon expanded his musical journey into Indian film songs. His first major step onto the orchestral stage came with the Dil Ki Awaz Orchestra of Clarke Road, Penal. From there, his reputation steadily grew, and he later performed with other well-known bands including the BWIA National Indian Orchestra and the Gayatones Indian Orchestra.
Premchan was also a formidable competitor in singing contests and participated in many throughout his career, emerging victorious on numerous occasions. He became a familiar figure on the popular Mastana Bahar programme, reaching the finals several times and earning second prize on more than one occasion. His commanding voice and expressive delivery made him particularly admired for his renditions of songs by legendary playback singers such as Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, and Hemant Kumar, whose styles he interpreted with both authenticity and heartfelt emotion. In 1975, Premchan married his beautiful wife Radika, who became his number one fan and devoted supporter, always encouraging and inspiring him throughout his musical journey. Together they built a loving family and were blessed with two sons, Neel and Alvin, who were a constant source of pride and joy to him.
Over the years, Premchan’s talent carried him beyond the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. He toured extensively throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe, sharing his music with appreciative audiences across the diaspora. Among the proudest highlights of his career were his performances at the world-renowned Royal Albert Hall, the Commonwealth Institute in London, and Roy Thomson Hall in Canada, prestigious stages that stand as testament to his remarkable musical journey. Beyond the spotlight, Premchan remained deeply devoted to his community and faith. He was a foundation member and active participant in the Village Mandir and Ramayan Group in Gandhi Village and regularly offered his voice in support of charitable causes and cultural events. He felt especially honoured to perform at celebrations commemorating the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, events proudly hosted in his birthplace of Gandhi Village by the “Mahatma Gandhi Charitable Organisation”, founded by Mr. Bobby Seenath.
Throughout his career he shared the stage with many accomplished artistes including Maestro Harry Mahabir, Polly Sookraj, Mayodeen Ackbarali, Kailash Kowlessar, Vishnu Rampersad, Satrohan Maharaj, Rana Mohip, Mungal Patasar, Bisram (Tatsil) Moonilal, Ramnarine (Tole) Moonilal, Parry Gosyne, Harold Boodoo, Ashwini Kupchand, Denis, Pandit Sunil Basdeo, Bywah Bhola, Krishna Patasar, Hansraj Ramkissoon and many other respected performers. His rich, powerful voice and sincere stage presence left a lasting impression wherever he performed, touching the hearts of audiences for decades. Beyond his love for music, Premchan cherished his family deeply and shared a very special bond with his three grandsons, whom he loved dearly and who brought him immense happiness in his later years.
On March 25, 2014, the musical community and his many admirers were deeply saddened when this beloved artiste departed this earthly realm. Though he is gone, the memory of his commanding voice and the joy he brought to audiences continue to live on. Premchand “Premchan” Jagdeo will always be remembered as a dedicated performer, a humble soul, and a treasured figure in the musical heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.
