Bisram Moonilal
Mr. Bisram Moonilal, affectionately known as Tatsil or Nick, stands as one of the most exceptionally talented musicians the Caribbean has ever produced. Born in Tarouba, Marabella, he moved to Gasparillo at a very young age, where the roots of his profound musical gift began to flourish. He often attributed much of his talent to his father, a fellow musician deeply involved in reading the Ramayan. It was in these formative years that Bisram secretly honed his skills on the harmonium, a testament to his innate passion.
His brother, Ramnarine (Tole) Moonilal, also a luminary in Trinidad and Tobago’s music scene, led the renowned Dil E Nadan Orchestra. Bisram’s journey with the band began subtly; he would secretly play the accordion with them until his extraordinary talent was discovered by the band members. Recognizing his undeniable skill, he was immediately welcomed as an official member. Bisram went on to become a key instrumentalist for Dil E Nadan Orchestra, particularly noted for his mastery of the lead guitar, mandolin, piano, and organ, as evidenced by recordings like “East Meets West.”
His musical prowess took him far and wide, touring extensively in Guyana, Suriname, and Canada. He had the distinguished honor of accompanying legendary calypso artists Lord Shorty and The Mighty Sparrow on their recordings with Acme Dil E Nadan, notably contributing mandolin to Shorty’s groundbreaking “Indrani,” a pivotal track in the birth of Soca.
Beyond his performance, this musical genius was a cherished friend and mentor to many, including the gifted Karamchand Maharaj and the vibrant Pandit Sunil Basdeo, shaping the next generation of musicians. In his later years, Bisram embraced his role as a freelance musician, dedicating much of his time to enriching Ramayan Satsangs and religious functions with his soulful melodies.
On Saturday, May 7th, 2016, the world sadly lost this most humble and creative guitarist and musician. Bisram Moonilal’s legacy, however, continues to resonate through the countless lives he touched and the rich tapestry of Caribbean music he helped to weave. His spirit now undoubtedly plays on, gracing the heavens with his magnificent artistry. Play on Mr. Bisram Moonilal play on…(Copyright Nisha Sharma 2025)
