Hemant Kumar

Hemant Kumar

Born in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, on June 16th, 1920, Hemant Kumar Mukhopadhyay (Bengali), also known as Hemant Mukherjee (India), was a Bengali singer, composer, producer and music director. He sang in Hindi films under the name Hemant Kumar. Hemant enrolled in the Asutosh College of the University of Calcutta, in his early life, but soon quit his academics to pursue a fulltime career in music, despite parental objection. Hemant recorded his first song for All India Radio in 1933.  In 1945, he married Bela Mukherjee, a singer from Bengal.  Hemant sang many Film Songs and Non-Film Songs throughout his career. Hemant also toured overseas during the 1960’s and performed in many concerts worldwide. Accompanying him on this tour were Pandit Sudershan Adhikari (the great Tabla Maestro) and Mahendra Bhavsar (renowned Mandolin Player). In 1964, he visited Trinidad and Tobago where he performed at the Naparima Bowl in San Fernando. Hemant Kumar composed the music for quite a number of movies including Bhagwat Mahima, Jagriti, Nagin and Taj. In 1980, he suffered a major heart attack that severely affected his singing capabilities.  He continued to record songs but his voice was a shade of its rich baritone past. In 1984, he Celebrated 50 years in music, and in that year, he released his very last album. September, 1989, he received the Michael Madhusudan Award in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He performed there, and immediately after returning, he suffered a major heart attack. On September 26th, 1989 he passed away in South Calcutta, a tremendous loss indeed to his fans everywhere. We have also added a verbal Biography of the late Hemant Kumar by Chandra Maharaj, with a sample of a song at the end. Please take a moment to listen to it.
