Kailash Kowlessar
From the quiet village of Ramai Trace, Debe, a legend emerged. Born Kailash Kowlessar on February 6, 1954, he inherited a legacy of artistry from his grandfather, sculptor Sidhoo Jagan, but it was his voice that would define his destiny. His journey began at 26 with Pandit Rampersad Tiwari (Darhi Baba) Ramayan Group from Debe. South Trinidad, but it was in 1996 that this star truly ascended. His mesmerizing rendition of “Suna Suna Lage” at the Mastana Bahar Grand Finals didn’t just win him the first prize; it cemented his place in musical history. He dominated Mohammed Rafi Competitions, his performances so riveting that he clinched the top spot not once, but twice. Kailash wasn’t confined to one stage; he graced performances with legendary bands like Dil-E-Nadan and the BWIA National Indian Orchestra, his voice soaring across continents during successful tours to Canada, the USA, Suriname, and Guyana.
Invited by us in 1996, Kailash and his dear friend Premchand Jagdeo delivered a heartfelt performance at the Divali concert hosted by the Pickering Devi Mandir, Canada, with all proceeds directly supporting the Mandir. Their performance left a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of all present.
Tragically, Kailash Kowlessar passed away prematurely on October 15, 1999, leaving behind his wife, Tara, and five children: Veera, Rupa, Shanta, Videsh, and Anushka. His son Videsh is actively pursuing a singing career carrying his father’s melodious torch.
We have added Audio & Video Samples of the voice of this Great Artiste for the listening pleasure of the many fans of the late Kailash Kowlessar across the globe, taken from our library. (Copyright Nisha Sharma 2025).
