Ashwini Kupchand
Ashwini Kupchand, born in the Republic of Guyana to Pandit Kupchand and Shreemati Mohanie Etwaroo, began his musical journey at the tender age of eight, singing in the Mandir in Vreed-en-Hoop. Despite never receiving formal music training, his natural talent and passion for singing were evident early on. As a teenager, he performed freelance with the Ramanand Orchestra and frequently appeared on the radio with the Melody Makers, led by David Singh. Music ran in his family, with well-known singers like Mr. Sewsarran Balkaran, Dr. Beni Balkaran, and Dr. Roopnarine Balkaran also hailing from Georgetown. While in Guyana, Ashwini also participated in numerous programs hosted by Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud.
In 1977, Ashwini graduated from the University of Guyana as a pharmacist and worked with the Ministry of Health. However, his love for music remained a central part of his life.
In 1980, Ashwini migrated to Trinidad, where his musical path continued to flourish. He met Mr. Chaytnath Maharaj at a Divali function hosted by the San Fernando General Hospital and was subsequently introduced to the Krishna Mandir in San Fernando, where he continued to sing. Through his friend Shivanand Maharaj, he connected with the talented Rana Mohip and his musically inclined family. Ashwini married Giatri, Rana’s eldest sister, and they have three children: Sudheer, who has also inherited his father’s singing talent, Ritesh, and Sudha.
Throughout his career, Ashwini has shared the stage with many renowned musicians and artistes, including Capil Gayadeen, Denis, Deoraj Seunarine (Dr. Abracadabra), Premchand Jagdeo, Shri Ravi Shukla, Sharda Maharaj, Dr. Umang Minocha, Karamchand Mohip, Suruj Rambachan, Balroop Roopchand and Gyanie Ramlochan. He continued to sing with Rana and Susan Mohip until 2005.
Currently, Ashwini resides in Canada, where he remains dedicated to his passion for singing and is an active member of the Malvern Spiritual Sai Centre.
