Nazimool Khan

Nazimool Khan

Nazimool Khan was one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most beloved Indian vocalists, a singer whose velvety tone, emotional depth, and commanding stage presence endeared him to audiences at home and abroad. His public journey began in 1976 when he made his debut on the popular television competition Mastana Bahar. For three consecutive years he competed, steadily rising in prominence and reaching the Grand Finals in 1979. From the outset, it was evident that Nazimool possessed not only talent, but a rare ability to connect deeply with listeners. Music was also a shared family bond. His sister, Ruby Khan Guptar, accompanied him on his first international tour to Canada with the Acme Dil-E-Nadan Orchestra. Soon after, they traveled to Suriname, captivating audiences with their distinctive style and his richly expressive voice. Whether at home or overseas, Nazimool’s performances were marked by sincerity, polish, and heartfelt delivery.

He later re-entered Mastana Bahar, once again reaching the Grand Finals and placing fifth with his riveting rendition of “Ajab Alam Adiraat” by Mehdi Hassan. In 1990, he returned to the competition and secured fourth place with the beloved Mohammed Rafi selection “Saaz Ho Tum Awaaz.” His interpretations of the great masters were never mere imitations; they were tributes infused with his own unmistakable emotion and character. In 1986, at a competition sponsored by the National Council of Indian Culture in tribute to Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh at the Palm’s Club in San Fernando, Nazimool’s moving performance earned him first prize. His excellence continued to shine when he captured the Nafeita Award for Best Male Vocalist of Indian Song in both 1989 and 1990, two consecutive years that affirmed his standing among the nation’s finest.

A widely traveled and prolific recording artiste, Nazimool toured Canada with the BWIA National Indian Orchestra and performed extensively in New York, Miami, and across Canada. His recordings, including Sentimental Journey (1 & 2), Gold (1 & 2), and Devotional Melodies, remain cherished by fans who continue to treasure his smooth phrasing and emotional sincerity. Throughout his glorious career, he shared the stage with distinguished artistes such as Ramnarine (Tole) Moonilal, Bisram (Tatsil) Moonilal, Maestro Harry Mahabir, Karamchand Maharaj, Sally Edwards, Premchand Jagdeo, Satrohan Maharaj, Dhanraj Singh, Kailash Kowlessar, Narie Mahabir, Harold Boodoo, Polly Sookraj, Ganga Persaud, “Ras” Nancoo Singh, Lalchand (Rafi) Singh, Paul Sookhai, and many other renowned performers. On every stage he graced, Nazimool left audiences spellbound, his performances lingering long after the final note had faded.

In August 2017, the Indian music fraternity was plunged into sorrow at the passing of this treasured son of the soil. Yet his voice lives on, in recordings, in memories, and in the hearts of the countless admirers who were moved by his artistry. Nazimool Khan’s legacy is one of passion, humility, and musical brilliance. He leaves behind not only an indelible mark on Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural landscape, but a timeless echo of melody that will continue to inspire generations to come.
