Vishnu Rampersad
Vishnu Rampersad, affectionately known as “Lou,” was born at Tulsa Trace in Penal, Trinidad, W.I., to Phulbasie and Rampersad Sookhai. From a very young age, he displayed a deep love for music and devotion, qualities that would eventually shape his life and earn him the admiration of many throughout Trinidad and Tobago and beyond. As a youth, Vishnu became an active member of the Tulsa Trace Cultural Group, where he began developing his musical talents and devotion to singing. His dedication to this group remained steadfast throughout his life, and he continued to be associated with it until his passing. Over the years, he also performed with several respected musical ensembles, including the Echo Sounds Indian Orchestra, Dil Ki Awaz Indian Orchestra, and The Gemini Indian Orchestra.
Vishnu was known for his heartfelt renditions of many classic songs by legendary playback singers such as Kishore Kumar and Mukesh. However, it was his extraordinary interpretation of the devotional songs of Hari Om Sharan that brought him widespread recognition. His voice bore such a striking resemblance to the revered Bhajan Maestro that he became fondly known by many as “the local Hari Om Sharan” of Trinidad and Tobago. Through his soulful and devotional singing, Vishnu brought the sacred spirit of Bhajan music to countless listeners.
His musical journey also carried him beyond the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. Vishnu toured extensively in Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Canada, and the United States, where he delighted audiences and connected with many devoted fans abroad. Despite his growing recognition, he remained humble and deeply committed to devotional service. Vishnu was always willing to lend his voice at Ramayan Satsangs, Pujas, Yagnas, Mehfils, concerts, farewells, and numerous cultural and religious gatherings, where his singing uplifted the spiritual atmosphere and brought joy to those present.
Throughout his career, this gifted artiste shared the stage with many highly respected and accomplished performers and spiritual leaders, including Pandit Mahase Maharaj, Pandit Sunil Basdeo, Pandit Ramnarine Basdeo, Budram Holass, Ustad Haniff Mohammed, Ramdeo Seelochan, Shakuntala Jangbahadoor, Ashook Yankaran, Denis (Tabla Player), Premchand Jagdeo, Rajkumar (Krishna) Persad, Kailash Kowlessar, Sookdeo Jagdeo, Ashwini Kupchand, Baal & Lily John, Tony Ramasar, Rohan Boodoo, Sagar Sookraj, Capil Gayadeen, and Dexter Raghunanan, among many other distinguished artistes and devotional singers. His presence on stage was always warmly received, and his divine and enchanting voice, filled with sincerity and devotion, never failed to captivate the hearts of his listeners.
Sadly, this beloved and highly respected singer Vishnu Rampersad departed from this world on October 28, 2009. With his passing, Trinidad and Tobago lost one of its cherished Bhajan voices, a singer whose purity of tone and devotional expression left a lasting impression on all who heard him perform. Vishnu was truly a great Bhajan singer, blessed with a voice that bore a remarkable resemblance to that of the great Hari Om Sharan, and through his singing he helped keep that sacred tradition alive in the Caribbean.
Vishnu is lovingly remembered by his two children, Nalini and Neil, along with many relatives, friends, fellow musicians, and devoted admirers who continue to cherish his memory. Though he has long departed from the physical stage, the beauty, devotion, and spiritual warmth of his voice continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were blessed to hear him sing. His legacy as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s beloved devotional singers lives on, inspiring generations through the timeless spirit of Bhajan music.
