Ramnarine Moonilal (Tole)
Ramnarine “Tole” Moonilal stands among the most respected and influential musicians ever to emerge from Trinidad and Tobago. Born on May 30, 1946, to Moonilal Gookool and Mamine Moonilal, his extraordinary affinity for music became evident from a very young age. Blessed with a natural ear and remarkable versatility, he quickly developed the ability to play multiple instruments, earning admiration from those around him and setting the foundation for a legendary musical career. In the late 1960s, Ramnarine became one of the founding pillars of the renowned Dil-E-Nadan Indian Orchestra alongside the celebrated maestro Ustad Yusuff Khan. The band would soon rise to national prominence, becoming one of the most powerful and respected orchestras in the Caribbean. In 1970, under Ramnarine’s leadership, Dil-E-Nadan captured the prestigious Prime Minister’s Trophy for Best Orchestral Band in Trinidad and Tobago. The competition was judged by the legendary Indian playback singer Mohammed Rafi, making the victory an especially historic and proud moment for the band and the local music fraternity.
In 1971 he married his beloved wife Bella Ramnarine, and together they built a beautiful family with three sons—Rennie, Raymond, and Richard Ramnarine. Each of them followed in their father’s footsteps, becoming accomplished artistes and musicians in their own right. For Ramnarine, despite his many accolades and achievements, his greatest pride remained the musical legacy carried forward by his sons. Over the decades he achieved tremendous success, sharing stages with internationally acclaimed artistes such as the revered Bhajan singer Hari Om Sharan and the celebrated Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu, among many other distinguished performers from India and around the world. His intense musical background and leadership helped elevate Indo-Caribbean orchestral music to new heights.
A master of arrangement and composition, Ramnarine also wrote and performed the test piece “Dostana” for the prestigious Saaj Samelan Competition, a challenging composition that other orchestras had to learn and perform in pursuit of the title. His musical vision, discipline, and creativity left an indelible mark on the development of Indian orchestral music in Trinidad and Tobago. Throughout his remarkable career he toured extensively across Europe, North America, and the Caribbean with the Dil-E-Nadan Orchestra. Along the way he shared major stages with numerous prominent artistes and musicians including Karamchand Maharaj, Dhanraj Singh, Mungal Patasar, Sagar Sookraj, Polly Sookraj, Ramdeo Seelochan, Hasib Majid, Nazimool Khan, Paul Sookhai, Premchand Jagdeo, Rajkumar “Krishna” Persad, Jonah Rajkumar, Farouk Baksh, Fado, Krishen Ramsook, and many other celebrated figures in the musical fraternity. Known for his discipline, precision, and passionate commitment to excellence, Ramnarine delivered flawless performances that consistently captivated audiences and earned the admiration of music lovers everywhere.
He was also the elder brother of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most outstanding arrangers and musicians, Bisram “Tatsil” Moonilal, who was also one of the early members of the Dil-E-Nadan Orchestra, further highlighting the remarkable musical heritage of the Moonilal family. Following his retirement from active performance, Ramnarine continued to remain closely connected to the music he loved. He enjoyed travelling with the band and dedicated time to mentoring and nurturing his six grandchildren, proudly guiding what he fondly referred to as “Generation Three” of the Dil-E-Nadan Orchestra. Today, the band continues its proud legacy under the management of his son Richard Ramnarine and remains one of the most celebrated orchestras in the region.
On January 29th 2023, profound sadness spread across Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the worldwide community of Dil-E-Nadan admirers with the passing of this extraordinary musical giant. Ramnarine “Tole” Moonilal’s life was one defined by dedication, humility, and an unwavering passion for music. His remarkable contributions, his guidance to younger musicians, and the legacy he built through his family and the Dil-E-Nadan Orchestra will continue to inspire generations to come. Though he is no longer with us, the beautiful music he created and the standards of excellence he set will forever echo throughout the musical heritage of the Caribbean.
