Sookdeo Jagdeo
Sookdeo Jagdeo, born on July 18, 1946, in Gandhi Village, Debe, South Trinidad, to Jagdeo and Popo (Silochna), was one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most celebrated Indian vocalists. From an early age, he was immersed in culture, language, and devotion. His grandmother played an important role in his upbringing by teaching him Bhojpuri (Hindi) at home, laying the foundation for the musical and cultural journey that would define his life. At the tender age of fourteen, Sookdeo began singing Bhajans at Yagnas, where his powerful and devotional voice quickly captured the attention of listeners. That same year, he made his debut on radio, receiving glowing reviews that marked the beginning of an extraordinary musical career. He was also the beloved brother of the renowned singer Premchand Jagdeo, and together their family name became deeply respected within the Indo-Caribbean musical tradition.
Determined to refine his natural talent, Sookdeo later joined the classes of Professor B.M. Bhattacharya in Princes Town, where he studied drama, music, and language. This period of training proved invaluable, greatly strengthening his vocal ability, stage presence, and artistic expression. During his early travels to Guyana, Sookdeo had the rare privilege of meeting and performing with the legendary Mukesh at the Maha Sabha Hall. On that memorable occasion, he shared the stage with the inimitable Mukesh as well as noted performers Mohan Nandu and Govind Ram, an experience that further elevated his reputation as a gifted vocalist. Upon returning to Trinidad, Sookdeo performed in the famous “Shakuntala Drama”, staged at both Naparima Bowl and Queen’s Hall, where he acted and sang to the admiration of large audiences. His reputation grew even stronger when he entered the Rafi Arzoo Singing Competition, judged by the legendary Mohammed Rafi and the celebrated music maestro Enoch Daniels. Sookdeo’s fame “spread like wildfire” throughout Trinidad, after winning that competition.
In 1967, Sookdeo achieved another milestone when he was awarded a scholarship by the Indian High Commission to further his musical studies in India. He pursued formal training at the Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi and at Delhi University, where he studied vocal music, languages, and classical techniques for nearly five years. While in India, he performed on many prestigious stages and was also heard on the All India Radio airwaves, gaining valuable international exposure. Returning home to Trinidad with years of professional training and artistic maturity, Sookdeo Jagdeo captivated audiences with a voice that was both powerful and emotionally expressive. His performances quickly earned him a devoted following, and he toured extensively throughout the Caribbean, including Guyana and Suriname, as well as other countries where Indo-Caribbean culture thrived.
In 1990, he entered the popular Mastana Bahar Competition, where he once again demonstrated his remarkable vocal talent by capturing first place in the Grand Finals. Throughout his long and illustrious career, Sookdeo remained a freelance singer, admired for his independence and dedication to musical excellence. Among the most memorable highlights of his career was serving as a playback singer in the film Operation Maconaima and sharing the stage with the legendary C.H. Atma, an experience he cherished deeply. Sookdeo Jagdeo was known not only for his vocal brilliance but also for his versatility and commanding stage presence. Over the years, he performed alongside many of the Caribbean’s finest musicians and singers, including Pandit Mahase Maharaj, Deoraj Seunarine, Ustad Haniff Mohammed, K.B. Singh, Gangadhar Vidoor Jagroop, Dhanraj Singh, Denis (Tabla Player), Michael Salickram, Lalchand “Rafi” Singh, Sagar Sookraj, Rajkumar “Krishna” Persad, Pandit Sunil Basdeo, Kailash Kowlessar, Polly Sookraj, Vishnu Rampersad, Mayodeen Ackbarali, Satrohan Maharaj, and numerous other distinguished artistes.
His stage appearances were always warmly received, his performances consistently world-class, and his rich, resonant voice captivated audiences wherever he performed. On November 8, 2012, the nation and the wider Indo-Caribbean musical community mourned the passing of this extraordinary cultural icon. Yet his legacy lives on through the music he shared, the lives he inspired, and the cultural pride he helped nurture among generations of listeners.
