Sohan Girdharrie
The Legendary Sohan Girdharrie was born on May 23, 1926, at Forres Park Estate in Claxton Bay, to Girdharrie and Sukhia. From humble beginnings, he was raised in a home filled with devotion and music. His father, an indentured labourer on the sugar cane estate, was also a gifted Khanjri Bhajan singer, while his dear mother was a talented Indian folk vocalist. It was in this sacred atmosphere that young Sohan discovered his love for singing at just ten years old.
He greatly admired the great artiste K. C. Dey (singer, actor and music director) especially the Bhajans “Man Ki Ankhen Khol Baba” and “Jawo Jawo Ai Mere Sadhu.” He also sang songs from classic films such as Dillagi and Barsaat. Inspired by respected Indian Classical Singers like Sam Sher of Couva and Charlie Babwah of Springvale, Claxton Bay, he entered the world of classical singing at age 21.
Over the years, Sohan became a cherished figure at Ramayan Satsangs, Yagnas, farewells, and Indian Classical Concerts. He accompanied esteemed Pandits such as Pandit Rambarran Sharma, Pandit Jagdeo Maharaj, and Pandit Mahadeo Maharaj. He shared the stage with great singers including K.B. Singh, Ramcharitar, Henry Tooloom Dindial, Yusuff Khan, and Haniff Mohammed, performing even at Queen’s Hall and earning many competition titles. His talent carried him to Canada, the USA, and Suriname, travelling alongside Haniff Mohammed on some of these tours.
His musical legacy continues through his gifted children, including Moonilal Girdharrie, Rooplal Girdharrie (Rooplal G) and Sandy Girdharrie, as well as his nephew Solo Girdharrie. On July 2, 2014, at the age of 88, Sohan Girdharrie gently departed this world. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, his voice, humility, and devotion remain alive in the hearts of all who heard him sing. He is profoundly missed by his family, friends, and the countless admirers across Trinidad and Tobago and beyond who were blessed by his timeless music.
We at Hindisongstt extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and devoted fans of the Legendary Sohan Girdharrie. May his legacy continue to inspire, and may Bhagwan grant him eternal Shanti and a place at His divine lotus feet.
