Narie Mahabir
Narie Mahabir, the son of the legendary Harry Mahabir — one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most revered musical maestros, was destined for a life immersed in melody and rhythm. Born into a household where music was both passion and profession, Narie began playing instruments at the tender age of seven. His remarkable natural ability quickly became evident, and by the age of eight he had already embarked on his first international tour to Jamaica, a sign of the extraordinary journey that lay ahead.
For more than twenty-five years, Narie performed with one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most popular band the BWIA National Indian Orchestra, building the foundation of a distinguished and enduring career. Committed to refining his craft, he spent five years studying music literacy with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Band, mastering the art of reading and writing music. His versatility is exceptional; he is proficient on a wide array of instruments including saxophone, flute, clarinet, trombone, piccolo, conventional drums, congas, guitar, keyboards, tabla, and numerous other wind instruments.
After migrating to Canada, Narie pursued further formal training at the Royal Conservatory of Music, graduating with Honours. He later became a member of the prestigious Governor General’s Horse Guards Band, further cementing his reputation as a disciplined and accomplished musician. With decades of experience and refined musical training, Narie Mahabir established his own ensemble in Canada, the National Orchestra of Canada, proudly serving as its musical director and guiding force. Over the years, he has had the distinguished honour of accompanying some of India’s most celebrated playback and devotional singers, including Mahendra Kapoor, Jagjit Singh & Chitra Singh, Hari Om Sharan, C. H. Atma, and Bankim Pathak.
In addition, he has shared the stage with numerous distinguished Caribbean artistes such as Harold Boodoo, Polly Sookraj, Karamchand Maharaj, Mayodeen Akbarali, Rajmanee Maharaj, Khamrune Ali, Lakshmi Rampersad, Sookdeo Jagdeo, Satrohan Maharaj, Sally Edwards, Premchand Jagdeo, Lalchand (Rafi) Singh, Narsaloo Ramaya, Mohan Nandu, Isaac Mahaboob, Kailash Kowlessar, “Ras” Nancoo Singh, Dhanraj Singh, Baal and Lily John, among many other great artistes. Through these collaborations, Narie has earned widespread admiration for his artistry, versatility, and unwavering professionalism, solidifying his reputation as one of the most accomplished and respected musicians of his generation.
Renowned not only for his technical brilliance but also for his warmth and stage presence, Narie Mahabir has the rare gift of leaving audiences spellbound — transporting them into a joyful and uplifting musical experience. He continues to perform across North America and beyond, sharing his passion and entertaining music lovers from all backgrounds with the same humility and excellence that have defined his remarkable journey.
