Denis (Tabla Player)
Denis is one of the most accomplished Dholak and Tabla players emerging out of the West Indies. He is from a lineage of great musicians. Denis was exposed to musical instruments from a young age, and followed in his family’s footsteps. He spent many years as a Dholak and Tabla player with the T & TEC Gayatones Orchestra, led by the great distinguished Capil Gayadeen, where he made his mark and then he moved on to the Sur Sangeet Orchestra. He later became a freelance musician. He taught tabla and Dholak classes in the Tulsa Trace Hindu community in Trinidad. He was an active member of the Tulsa Trace Ramayan Group led by Khristendath Neebar.
This great rhythm maestro, Denis, has accompanied many outstanding artistes such as Tom Griffin, Prem Shah, Sookdeo Jagdeo, Premchand Jagdeo, Kailash Kowlessar, Ashwini Kupchand, Vishnu Rampersad and Rana Mohip among many other distinguished performers. On every stage he graced, his exceptional command of rhythm earned not just applause, but heartfelt admiration from audiences who felt the power and precision of his playing.. Denis is not merely a percussionist, he is a true custodian of rhythm. His fingers move with breathtaking precision and grace upon the Tabla and Dholak, as though guided by instinct and devotion. There is a certain magic in his touch; each beat resonates with warmth, depth, and an unmistakable love for music. He does not simply keep time, he breathes life into every composition, anchoring melodies with strength and soul.
Now residing in the United States, Denis continues his musical journey as a master musician, accompanying many top Indian artistes based there. Yet no matter where he performs, his heart remains rooted in the pure joy of rhythm. His dedication, humility, and passion for the art form have made him not only a respected accompanist, but a beloved figure among fellow musicians and audiences alike, a rhythm maestro whose music speaks long after the final beat fades.
