Sally Edwards
Sally Edwards of St. Augustine, Trinidad, was a gifted singer whose voice and passion for music touched hearts across the Caribbean and beyond. Her love for singing began humbly during morning devotions at primary school, but it quickly blossomed into a remarkable musical journey.
Over the years, Sally performed with several well-known bands, including Naya Aakash Indian Orchestra, Triveni Indian Orchestra, Naya Zamana Indian Orchestra, T&TEC Gayatones Indian Orchestra, D. Rampersad Indian Orchestra, and the BWIA National Indian Orchestra. Her talent carried her to audiences throughout North America, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean, where she captivated listeners with her powerful and heartfelt performances. Sally was honoured to perform alongside many talented artistes throughout her career including, Capil Gayadeen, Rajkumar Krishna Persad, Rana Mohip, Karamchand Maharaj, Harold Boodoo, Premchand Jagdeo, Susan Mohip, Khamrune Ali, Lalchand ‘Rafi’ Singh, Ramnarine “Tole” Moonilal, Nazimool Khan, Polly Sookraj, Sookdeo Jagdeo, Bisram “Tatsil” Moonilal, Baal & Lily John and many more distinguished performers. Sally Edwards possessed a special command of her audiences while on stage, always leaving her listeners mesmerized and hungry for more. Sally’s performances were unforgettable experiences, where passion met skill, and her love for music shone brighter than any spotlight.
In 1987, she married her husband Zaid, who remained a strong and loving supporter of her musical career. Sally’s star rose even higher in 1988 when she entered the popular Mastana Bahar Competition, winning both First Prize and the People’s Choice Award. The following year, she captured First Place in the National Ladies Singing Competition. Throughout her career, Sally received numerous accolades, including the Nafita Award for Female Vocalist (two years), the Indo Caribbean Music Award, the Sunshine Award in New York, the 90.5 Radio Station Award, recognition from the NGO for the Advancement of Women, and the prestigious Trinidad and Tobago Chaconia Silver Medal presented by President Noor Hassanali.
Beyond the stage, Sally was a devoted mother of five children, whom she considered her greatest blessing and proudest achievement. On April 1st, 2011, the Caribbean lost a beloved voice far too soon. Though her life was cut short, Sally Edwards’ music, warmth, and legacy continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
