Narindra Ramdular
Narindra Ramdular’s love for Indian music was nurtured from early childhood. Born into a musical household, he is the son of Michael Ramdular, affectionately known as “Postman,” a respected Trinidad classical singer and harmonium player. From the tender age of five, Narindra would sit quietly observing his father rehearse, and whenever the opportunity arose, he would eagerly attempt to reproduce the melodies himself. By that same age, he had begun singing and soon emerged as a child prodigy, performing at weddings and Yagnas throughout his village.
Deeply influenced by the repertoire of India’s famed blind singer K. C. Dey, whose songs his father often performed, Narindra developed an enduring admiration for the legendary Manna Dey, K.C. Dey’s illustrious nephew. His heartfelt renditions of Manna Dey’s classics earned him widespread recognition in Trinidad and secured him finalist positions on two separate occasions in the popular television program Mastana Bahar. Notably, Narindra is also the elder brother of the ever-versatile musician and popular Canada-based keyboardist, Sharma Ramdular, reflecting a family richly endowed with musical talent.
As he matured into his teenage years, Narindra expanded his musical horizons, performing with some of Trinidad’s leading orchestras. He became highly regarded as one of the country’s finest accordionists, performing with the BWIA National Indian Orchestra and the Naya Zamana Orchestra. In 1978, he was among the founders of the Triveni Orchestra and later assumed leadership from 1980 to 1987. Under his musical direction, the band gained immense respect for its discipline, polished performances, and artistic excellence.
After migrating to North America, Narindra continued to flourish musically, frequently collaborating with his close friend Roopchan Rambharat. He has shared the stage with renowned artistes from India and Pakistan, including Anup Jalota, Anuradha Paudwal, Kumar Sanu, Kamran Mehdi Hassan, Imran Mehdi Hassan, and Asif Mehdi Hassan, sons of the great Ustad Mehdi Hassan. Notably, during the Anup Jalota and Anuradha Paudwal tours of Trinidad, the USA, and Canada, he played a prominent role as accordionist. Today, he focuses on mehfils and Bollywood-style concerts, collaborating with a wide array of singers from India and Pakistan.
A remarkably versatile and dynamic performer, Narindra has also performed alongside many of the Caribbean’s distinguished artistes, including Nazimool Khan, Ruby Khan Gupta, Rakesh Yankaran, Sharma Ramdular, Seetal K. Persad, Maestro Harry Mahabir, Narsaloo Ramaya, Lalchand (Rafi) Singh, Harold Boodoo, Karamcand Maharaj, Narie Mahabir and many other acclaimed artistes. His exceptional artistry, vibrant stage presence, and heartfelt performances continue to captivate audiences wherever he appears, earning him admiration and respect across generations.
