Lalchand (Rafi) Singh
Lalchand “Rafi” Singh has earned both national and international acclaim as the Mohammed Rafi of the Caribbean, a title that reflects not imitation, but remarkable vocal resemblance and heartfelt interpretation. Born on May 22, 1948, to Girwar and Sumaria in Pasea Village, Tunapuna, Trinidad & Tobago, his musical journey began at the tender age of ten. Accompanying his father to Satsangs and religious gatherings, young Lalchand developed a deep appreciation for devotional and classical singing that laid the foundation for his future success.
His extraordinary voice soon attracted attention. Narsaloo Ramaya, leader of the Naya Zamana Orchestra, was so impressed by the young singer’s sweet and captivating tone that he immediately invited him to join the band. Lalchand remained with Naya Zamana for approximately twenty years, honing his craft and becoming one of its standout vocalists.
In 1968, he entered the Mohammed Rafi Singing Competition at the Himalaya Club and captured first prize with a stunning rendition of “Madhuban Mein Radhika Naache Re.” It was at this event that Mr. Kamaluddin Mohammed observed how closely Lalchand’s style, voice, and presentation mirrored that of Mohammed Rafi, affectionately dubbing him “Rafi”, a name that has remained with him ever since.
His list of accolades continued to grow. In 1971, he won first prize in the popular Mastana Bahar competition with his unforgettable performance of “Lapak Jhapak” from the film Boot Polish. That victory further cemented his reputation as one of Trinidad’s premier vocalists.
Lalchand has toured extensively throughout Guyana, the United States, Canada, and India. A particularly sacred moment in his life was the opportunity to sing at Prasanthi Nilayam in South India for Sri Sathya Sai Baba, an honour he cherishes deeply. In 1996, he migrated to the United States, where he continues to perform as a freelance singer with various bands, delighting audiences with his timeless renditions. Over the years, he has also produced several recordings, including a special CD dedicated to the memory of Mohammed Rafi.
Throughout his illustrious career, Lalchand “Rafi” Singh has shared the stage with many outstanding artistes, including Sookdeo Jagdeo, Sagar Sookraj, Mayodeen Akbarali, King Ratiram, Rajmani Maharaj, Polly Sookraj, Vishnu Rampersad, Lakshmi Rampersad, Satrohan Maharaj, Sham Rampersad, Dhanraj Singh, Harold Boodoo, Karamchand Maharaj, and Narie Mahabir, among many others.
Residing in the USA but forever connected to his Trinidadian roots, Lalchand “Rafi” Singh continues to mesmerize audiences with performances filled with emotion, nostalgia, and authenticity. His voice remains a cherished gift to his fans, bringing joy, pride, and lasting memories wherever he sings.
