Khamrune Ali
Khamrune Ali is one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most treasured female vocalists, a voice shaped by devotion, perseverance, and an unshakable love for music. Born to Omaid Ali and Zaitoon Ali in Warrenville, Cunupia, her journey began at just thirteen years old, singing Muslim religious songs with sincerity and youthful passion. Even in those early years, it was clear that her voice carried something special, warmth, strength, and an ability to move hearts. At the age of fifteen, she stepped confidently onto the stage for the first time, entering a singing competition at St. Joseph’s Muslim School organized by Masack Sharma. Competing among many talented young performers, she earned second place, an early sign of the promise she held. Determined to grow, Khamrune taught herself numerous film songs simply by listening attentively to the radio, absorbing melody and expression with remarkable natural instinct.
By seventeen, she entered the Island Wide Singing Competition at the Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, Trinidad, competing alongside leading young artistes of the time and once again securing second prize. Each competition strengthened her confidence and refined her stage presence. Her musical path then expanded when she joined a Ramayan group under the leadership of Soogrim Ram. That association evolved into the formation of the band Naya Kadam in Malick, Barataria, where she remained a dedicated member for many years. Her voice continued to blossom, drawing admiration from fellow musicians. It was Hosein Khan who, recognizing her exceptional tone, introduced her to Maestro Harry Mahabir. After a successful audition, she was invited to join the prestigious BWIA National Indian Orchestra, where she served as a vocalist for over eight years, a period that elevated her to national prominence. Her defining triumph came in 1982 when she competed in the renowned Mastana Bahar competition. Reaching the Grand Finals, she captured first prize, instantly becoming a household name. That victory marked a turning point, transforming a gifted young singer into a celebrated national figure.
Khamrune toured extensively across Guyana, Suriname, Barbados, Jamaica, Canada, and the United States, carrying the rich musical heritage of Trinidad and Tobago wherever she performed. Over the years, she freelanced with numerous bands and shared the stage with distinguished artistes such as Harold Boodoo, Mayodeen Akbarali, Narie Mahabir, Lalchand (Rafi) Singh, Sally Edwards, Polly Sookraj, Kailash Kowlessar, Premchand Jagdeo, and Satrohan Maharaj, among many other accomplished performers. In 1996, she migrated to Florida, USA, where she continues to grace stages and cultural events, remaining deeply connected to her roots while sharing her talent with international audiences. Her performances are known for their emotional depth and graceful delivery, often leaving listeners uplifted and filled with cherished memories. From a young girl singing devotional songs in Cunupia to an internationally recognized vocalist, Khamrune Ali’s journey reflects dedication, faith, and resilience. Though she now resides in the United States, her heart and voice remain forever intertwined with the cultural soul of Trinidad and Tobago, a proud ambassador of its rich musical tradition.
