Balliram Bala

The renowned Balliram Bala was born in the year 1941 to Sonya Ramroop and Ramroop Latchman at Phoenix Park, California. His father was a very versatile Bhajan singer and from a very early age he took him along wherever he went. Balliram’s father purchased a drum (dholak) for him when he was just ten years old, and he dutifully taught him to play the drum. It was the first instrument he learnt to play and he had a deep passion for it. His interest in the harmonium came a little later, however his love for the harmonium knew no bounds. In 1957 Balliram moved to Penal to live, where he met his charming wife Krishendaye. In 1959 they got married; together they had eight wonderful children, five boys and three girls. He met the talented Indian Classical Artiste Bholan Gangadeen, a gifted classical singer, while accompanying him on the harmonium it sparked an interest in him to learn this art form. He had a special love in listening to the famous Mayodeen Ackbarali, Sonny Mathews, Isaac Yankarran and Ustad Haniff Mohammed sing Indian Classical Songs.

The first major competition he entered in Classical Singing was held by the NCIC (National Council of Indian Culture), where he went up against the all time greats – James Ramsawak, Ramdhanie Shamma and K.B. Singh to name a few. At this competition going up against a very elite line up of artistes, he emerged the 3^rd place winner. From here on there was no stopping him. He entered many competitions emerging victorious. Presently he is ranked as one of the Top Classical singers in Trinidad and Tobago. Balliram Bala enjoys Classical Singing thoroughly and to date he performs on stages across the country, bringing great joy to his listening audience everywhere. We mourn the passing of a great icon and friend, Balliram Bala on November 10th 2016 at the age of 75. His contribution to music and culture was immense. We at Hindisongstt offer our deepest condolences to his family and to everyone who was touched by his incredible life and work.
