Polly Sookraj
Polly Sookraj, affectionately known as the “Nightingale of Trinidad and Tobago,” is celebrated as one of the nation’s finest and most accomplished female vocalists. Born into a deeply musical family, she inherited her gift from her talented parents, Patiya and Sookraj, both respected musicians and singers. Music filled her home from childhood, and she grew up alongside her gifted brother Sagar Sookraj and talented sister Rajdai Sookraj, each distinguished in their own right. The versatile Sagar played a pivotal role in nurturing Polly’s talent and guiding her early development, helping to shape her rise as one of Trinidad’s premier female voices.
Success came at an early age. Polly became a member of the Bharat Sangeet Orchestra under the leadership of her illustrious sister Rajdai Sookraj, gaining invaluable stage experience and national recognition. Her participation in the prestigious Mastana Bahar Competition further elevated her profile. It was there that Maestro Harry Mahabir, leader of the BWIA National Indian Orchestra at the time, immediately recognized her extraordinary potential and invited her to join his ensemble. This marked the beginning of a flourishing professional journey.
Throughout the years, Polly freelanced with several prominent bands, captivating audiences with her clarity of tone, emotional expression, and graceful stage presence. Between 1986 and 1988, she was awarded a scholarship through ICCR to pursue advanced musical studies in India at the esteemed Bharatiya Kala Kendra. This formal training deepened her classical foundation and refined her already impressive artistry. Upon her return to Trinidad, Polly sang for many years with the Manoranjan Orchestra, solidifying her status as a leading vocalist. Her articulate phrasing and melodious delivery earned her the prestigious NAFEITA Award for three consecutive years (1989–1991), a testament to her consistency and excellence.
Polly’s talent has carried her far beyond local shores. She has toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Suriname, and Jamaica. In 1993 and 1994, she had the distinct honor of performing alongside renowned Bollywood playback singer Kumar Sanu during his West Indies tour, further affirming her international caliber. In June 1994, Polly married the esteemed Parmeshwar “Parry” Gosyne, himself a versatile singer and musician. Together, they are fondly known as “The PGs,” a dynamic musical duo dedicated to continual rehearsal, refinement, and performance. Their shared commitment to excellence and devotion to their musical journey have made them a beloved pair on many stages.
Over the years, Polly has appeared alongside numerous distinguished artistes, including Chrishna Mano, Karamchand Maharaj, Harold Boodoo, Sookdeo Jagdeo, Devindra Pooran, Narie Mahabir, Bhim Singh, Mayodeen Ackbarali, Satrohan Maharaj, Premchand Jagdeo, Rana Mohip, Narsaloo Ramaya, Ramesh Maraj, Rajmanee Maharaj, Ganga Persaud, Lalchand (Rafi) Singh, Khamrune Ali, Bhaskar Sharma and many other cherished performers. On every occasion, her entrancing voice captures the attention of listeners, transporting them into what many describe as a heavenly musical experience.
Today, Polly continues to dedicate herself wholeheartedly to her art. She performs at concerts, Mehfils, Satsangs, and family celebrations, consistently delivering performances marked by elegance, warmth, and emotional depth. Her charming and captivating voice, coupled with her humility and professionalism, has earned her widespread admiration at home and abroad. Polly Sookraj remains a true cultural treasure, a master entertainer, a devoted artiste, and unquestionably one of the finest female vocalists to emerge from Trinidad and Tobago’s rich musical heritage.
