Lily Ramcharan the very popular Indian Classical Singer was born to Emmanuel (Zoon) Ramcharan and Elvina Ramcharan at Vistabella, San Fernando, Trinidad. Lily’s father was the great classical drummer – Zoon, he was very influential in Lily becoming the great singer that she is today. At the age of 5 her family moved to Marabella, where many of the great Classical Singers such as K.B. Singh, Yusuff Khan and Henry Tooloom Dindial would gather at their home quite frequently for singing sessions. From her close association with this group of prominent singers from a very young age Lily developed a great passion for Classical Singing. James Ramsawak was her guru for Classical Singing; the late Pandit Mahase Maharaj also had a great influence in Lily becoming an accomplished singer. In 1971 she was encouraged to enter the Popular Mastana Bahar for the first time. 1974 Lily entered the Caroni Limited Sugar Workers Classical Singing Competition, amidst a group of elite Classical Performers she emerged the winner. On that very same day which was St. Peters Day she competed in the OWTU Singing Competition in Fyzabad where she entered the “B” Class Competition winning the first prize. These two victories bought her instant fame, making her a household name in Trinidad and Tobago. She once again entered Mastana Bahar where she placed third in the Grand Finals. 1981 she entered the “Battle of the Giants” Singing Competition with all of the great “A” Class Singers. Lily entered the National Ladies Singing Competition in 1989, which was held at Skinner’s Park in San Fernando competing against some of Trinidad’s best female artiste she emerged the second place winner. She was the first woman to win the Island wide Singing Competition held by Deshi Geet in 2002 with her incredibly melodious and unforgettable performance. In 2003 she won both the HCU Classical Singing Competition and the Indian Arrival Day Singing Competition. She has toured extensively in Suriname, Holland and India. Lily has many recordings to her title, she teamed up with Rajdai Sookraj for “Songbird”, she has also done “Moods of Lily Ramcharan,” “Joyful Lily,” “Tribute to James Ramsewak” and others. Lily Ramcharan is in a class of her own, an accomplished singer with consistently brilliant and exciting performances.
