Satrohan Maharaj was born and raised at Five Rivers in Arouca, North Trinidad, West Indies. His music career started at the tender age of twelve as a guitarist, with bands like SUHANA SAFAR, NAYA HINDUSTANI, NAYA ZAMANA, and ANAND SANGEET. However his debut as a singer started at the age of twenty two with the BWIA NATIONAL INDIAN ORCHESTRA, led by maestro HARRY MAHABIR. His introduction to the local stage came when he entered the popular Mastana Bahar series. As a contestant he reached the finals on two occasions. His popularity in singing KISHORE KUMAR songs locally took him to foreign countries to perform like the United States of America, Canada, England, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica, Miami and India. Satrohan later travelled to India to further his education in music. He studied music at the GANDARVA MAHA VIDDYALA and the SHRIRAM BHARATIYA KALA KENDRA. While in India he had the honour of performing for the screen actor DEV ANAND. He was also awarded a scholarship in India by INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS (ICCR). He was fortunate to perform with international singers like KUMAR SANU, ANUP JALOTA, BISWAJEET and local icons like SUNDAR POPO, SONNY MANN and RAKESH YANKARAN. He was awarded the NAFEETA AWARD in 1991, for best local male Indian singer. He recorded over thirty CDS, and cassettes, and have over three hundred recordings. Satrohan is also a music composer, arranger and song writer. He teaches Hindustani and English music in vocals, keyboard synthesizer and guitar. Satrohan Maharaj continues to deliver consistently brilliant and exciting performances both nationally and internationally. Sadly on December 17th, 2022 we lost this shining star.
