The all time great Playback Singer Mahendra Kapoor was born on January 9, 1934 in Amritsar, India. From a very tender age Mohammed Rafi was a great source of inspiration to him. He had an illustrious singing career through five decades, singing over 25,000 songs in many different languages. With his unique styling of singing Mahendra Kapoor went on to win many Awards during his lifetime, including the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in the years 1968 and 1972, Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer in the years 1964, 1968 and 1975. In the year 2000 he won the Prestigious Bollywood Lifetime Achievement Award at The Bollywood Music Awards in New York. Mahendra Kapoor toured extensively across the globe. He visited Trinidad on two occasions in 1972 and 2002. In 1972 he had a grand performance at Skinner Park in San Fernando and in the year 2002 he performed to a very enthusiastic sold out crowd at the Centre of Excellence in Macoya. He was an excellent stage performer who held his audience captive throughout his performances. He would be most remembered for his renditions of Mere Desh Ki Dharti, Chalo Ek Baar, Neel Gagan Ke Tale, Aur Nahi Bas Aur Nahi, Nadiya Na Peeye Kabhi Apna Jal, Hey Ram Chandra Keh Gaye Siya Se and many other powerful renditions. Mahendra Kapoor was married, he had three daughters and one son. His son Rohan Kapoor is an acclaimed actor and singer, following in his father’s footsteps. September 27, 2008 was a very sad day indeed when this great hero of the Music World Mahendra Kapoor died at the age of 74 leaving his family and all of his fans to mourn his passing.
