Usha Mangeshkar
Usha Mangeshkar, the renowned playback singer and singing sensation, is the daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti (Shudhamati). She is the younger sister of the legendary singers Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, and the older sister of the very popular music director Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Born into one of India’s most distinguished musical families, she was surrounded by music from an early age and developed a deep appreciation for both classical and devotional traditions. Over the years she carved out her own identity in the world of music with her unique voice, versatility and expressive style of singing.
Usha Mangeshkar became widely recognized for her contributions as a playback singer in Indian cinema, lending her voice to numerous film songs, devotional Bhajans and regional compositions. In addition to Hindi film music, she has rendered a large number of Marathi songs, devotional pieces and traditional melodies that have been cherished by audiences in India and throughout the Indian diaspora. Her clear diction, devotional feeling and heartfelt delivery have made many of her songs especially beloved during religious and festive occasions.
She toured extensively throughout the world, performing before enthusiastic audiences wherever lovers of Indian music gathered. We in Trinidad and Tobago were indeed very fortunate to have her grace our shores in the year 1980, where she gave magnificent performances at the Jean Pierre Complex and Skinner Park. Those memorable concerts remain cherished by many who had the opportunity to witness her exceptional talent live on stage.
She sang many memorable film songs and bhajans. “Hey Ana Dhana Ki Maharani,” from the movie Laxmi Pooja, along with “He Maha Laxmi Maa” and “Mai To Aarti Utaru,” are just a few of her very popular selections that many of us grew up listening to, especially during the time of Diwali. These devotional renditions continue to be played in homes and temples, bringing a sense of joy and reverence during the festival of lights.
Throughout her long and distinguished singing career, Usha Mangeshkar has given music lovers many unforgettable and timeless selections. Her contributions to film music, devotional singing and regional songs have ensured that her voice continues to be appreciated by generations of listeners, and her musical legacy remains an important part of the rich heritage of Indian music.
