Pandit Uttam Maharaj (Fifth Dharmacharya of Trinidad & Tobago SDMS)

Pandit Uttam Maharaj (September 19, 1948 – November 29, 2018) was a deeply respected spiritual leader and educator in Trinidad and Tobago, most notably serving as the fifth Dharmacharya of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS).

Born in Rousillac, South Trinidad, Pandit Uttam was the third of nine children born to Pandit Deodath Maharaj and Shrimatie Basdaye Maharaj. His spiritual journey began early, deeply influenced by his Aja, Pandit Surujnath Dubay, who initiated him into Karamkanda and Panditai as a teenager. This lineage extended back to his great-grandfather, Pandit Jaganath Dubay, who hailed from India.

His comprehensive education included Rousillac Hindu School, St. Benedict’s College La Romain and Corinth Teachers Training College. He also studied in India where he obtained a Diploma at a renowned institution based in New Delhi, India, in the art of teaching Hindi.  He also cultivated significant musical talents, completing seven years of training in vocals and sitar under the guidance of his esteemed Guru, Prof. H.S. Adesh, the founder of the Bharatiya Vidya Sansthhaan (Institute of Indian Knowledge), Trinidad and Tobago.

Pandit Uttam Maharaj dedicated his life to both education and spiritual guidance. He taught at the Rousillac Hindu School (his alma mater) until retirement while simultaneously serving as a deeply committed Pandit to the Hindu community of Trinidad and Tobago. Before ascending to the highest spiritual office, he was a committed and influential member of the SDMS and the Pandits Parishad of the SDMS of Trinidad and Tobago. His profound knowledge and unwavering dedication paved the way for his ascension. On April 30, 2005, he was collectively chosen as the fifth Dharmacharya, a prestigious role he held with steadfast commitment until November 29^th 2018, His influence reached globally, conducting numerous pujas and ceremonies in countries like India, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Later in his life, he found tremendous inspiration from the renowned Sanskrit Prof. Ramraksha Tripathi from Varanasi, India.

In May 1974, Pandit Uttam Maharaj married Shrimatie Indrawatie Maharaj, the beloved daughter of Pandit Krishna Maharaj and Shrimatie Deokie Maharaj of Caroni, Trinidad. Notably, Pandit Krishna Maharaj was the Fourth Dharmacharya of the SDMS, highlighting the profound spiritual ties between their families.

Pandit Uttam and Shrimatie Indrawatie Maharaj were blessed with two sons: Pandit Amrit Maharaj and Pandit Sharad Maharaj. These devoted sons lovingly follow in the footsteps of their cherished father and the great ancestors, continuing the sacred service to humanity as Pandits. Pandit Uttam Maharaj also deeply cherished his grandchildren, Varenyam and Sanskriti, who were truly the light and joy of his life.

Pandit Uttam Maharaj’s passing on November 29, 2018, was a profound moment that left the entire Hindu population of Trinidad and Tobago in deep mourning. His absence created a void that was felt across the nation. He wasn’t just a leader; he was an icon, a beacon of wisdom, and a source of immense respect. His departure marked the end of an era, but his profound spiritual leadership, dedicated education, and unwavering service to the Sanatan Dharma continue to resonate and inspire generations.
