Pandit Siewdath Maharaj (former Upadharmacharya of Trinidad & Tobago SDMS)

Pandit Siewdath Maharaj was a highly respected Hindu priest, teacher, and spiritual leader who dedicated his entire life to the service and upliftment of Sanatan Dharma in Trinidad and Tobago. He hailed from the beautiful village of Esperanza, California, where he was born on October 16, 1916. He was the beloved son of Pandit Seetaram Maharaj and Shrimatie Biphani Maharaj, a family deeply rooted in religious values and devotion.
In 1936, Pandit Siewdath Maharaj married his beautiful wife Shrimatie Saubhagiya Maharaj, who came from the culturally rich village of Felicity, Chaguanas. Together, they were blessed with six children. His family continued his sacred legacy, as his sons and grandsons also dedicated their lives to Panditai, following in the footsteps of this great spiritual giant.
Pandit Siewdath Maharaj was admired and respected by people from far and wide. He was known for his deep knowledge of Hindu scriptures, including the Bhagwat Maha Puran,, Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Shiva Maha Puran, Devi Maha Puran, and Shri Ramcharitramanas, among many others. He was also a highly knowledgeable Jyotishi, offering guidance and support to countless individuals over the years.
Throughout his life, Panditji delivered numerous religious lectures and discourses across Trinidad and Tobago. His eloquent voice, clear explanations, and warm personality captivated audiences wherever he went. Many devotees were inspired by his teachings, and he trained and guided many shishyas (disciples) and devotees, both locally and internationally.
Pandit Siewdath Maharaj was one of the early members of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) and remained deeply committed to serving the wider Hindu community. He was also a foundation member of the Pandits Parishad of Trinidad and Tobago (SDMS). In the 1980s, in recognition of his dedication, knowledge, and service, he was conferred with the prestigious title of Upadharmacharya of the SDMS of Trinidad and Tobago, a role he fulfilled with humility and selfless devotion.
In 1996, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago honored Pandit Siewdath Maharaj with the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) for his outstanding contribution to religion and national life.
In August 1999, this noble soul departed from this earthly world. His passing brought deep sorrow to his family, disciples, friends, and well-wishers. However, his teachings, service, and spiritual legacy continue to live on through the many lives he touched and inspired.
Pandit Siewdath Maharaj will always be remembered as a pillar of Sanatan Dharma, a compassionate teacher, and a true servant of the people.
