Pandit Ramsoondar Parasram
Pandit Ramsoondar Parasram was born on 25th May 1938 in Mc Bean, Couva, to Pandit Parasram Maharaj and Shrimatie Sursattee Parasram Maharaj. He is the grandson of the revered Pandit Jadoonath Maharaj and Shrimatie Goomtee Maharaj and his maternal grandparents were Pandit Omkar Maharaj and Shrimatie Basmat Maharaj of Couva. Pandit Jadoonath Maharaj (his Aja) journeyed to Trinidad and Tobago from Soorangapur in Arra, Bihar, India, under the Indentureship Program, laying a strong spiritual foundation rooted in Sanatan Dharma.
From a very early age, Ramsoondar received Gurudiksha from his beloved Guruji, Pandit Jankie Persad Sharma, the second Dharmacharya (of Trinidad and Tobago SDMS) from Debe, South Trinidad. Guided by his learned father, Guruji and his elder brother Pandit Samsundar Parasram, he developed a deep understanding of Hindi, Sanskrit, Karamkanda, and the sacred rituals of Sanatan Dharma.
Pandit Ramsoondar received his early education at Exchange Presbyterian Primary School on Bryce Street, Couva, and later attended Naparima College in San Fernando. He began his teaching career at the Mc Bean Hindu School, after which he travelled to India to further his academic pursuits. At Indore University, he earned joint BSc degrees in Botany, Zoology, and Chemistry, graduating in 1976.
On returning to Trinidad, he taught at Mucurapo Secondary School, and later at Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive Secondary School, where he served with dedication and integrity until his retirement.
Panditji has always shared a close and respectful relationship with nature. He lovingly reared his own herd of cows, caring for them daily with devotion and discipline, and over time the herd grew to approximately 30 heads. He also maintained a thriving vegetable garden, generously sharing its produce with family and friends.
Though well trained from a young age in the field of Panditai, Pandit Ramsoondar’s formal journey along this divine path began unexpectedly while teaching at Carapichaima Senior Comprehensive Secondary School, when he was called upon to conduct a Diwali Puja at short notice. This moment marked the beginning of a lifelong service, as devotees from across Trinidad soon sought his guidance for Pujas and other sacred rites. He has also travelled to other Caribbean islands to serve the wider Hindu community.
Pandit Ramsoondar is the younger brother of the late, highly respected Pandit Samsundar Parasram of St. Augustine, and the elder brother of Pandit Rampersad Parasram, Dharmacharya of Trinidad and Tobago (SDMS). In 1974, he married Shrimatie Indira Parasram, daughter of Shri Raj Bahadursingh and Shrimati Bhagwantia Bahadursingh of Cedar Hill Rd. Tortuga Village. Together they are blessed with four children; Rajiv, Nita, Sanjiv, and Ranjiv, two of whom, Pandit Sanjiv and Pandit Ranjiv, proudly continue the family’s ancestral tradition in Panditai and Karamkanda.
Widely admired for his humility, simplicity, and gentle temperament, Panditji strives never to turn away a devotee seeking guidance. Now in his eighties, he continues to serve faithfully and tirelessly, carrying the enduring light of Sanatan Dharma throughout Trinidad.
