Ramnarine Pandit (Babna Pandit): A Life of Spiritual Dedication

Born in Rousillac, South Trinidad, in 1908, Ramnarine Pandit, affectionately known as Babna Pandit, blossomed into a pivotal spiritual leader whose life was a testament to Hindu scriptures and practices. His journey began with his parents, Balendra Pandit and Shrimati Kunti, who arrived in Trinidad from Nepal in the late 1800’s through the Indentureship program, bringing with them a rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

From a tender age, Babna Pandit was drawn to the spiritual path, inspired to walk in his father’s footsteps. His early education was profoundly shaped by his brother-in-law, Kallicharan Pandit of La Romain, South Trinidad, who provided invaluable tutelage in Karamkanda (rituals) and scriptural knowledge. Babna Pandit’s innate talent and dedication quickly shone through; he began by assisting his father at Pujas and other religious ceremonies before establishing his own acclaimed practice, soon becoming a household name across Trinidad.

Around the age of 32, Babna Pandit made the significant move with his family, leaving his cherished village of birth Rousillac for San Fernando. This decision further cemented his esteemed reputation. He was deeply cherished by the public and his numerous “chelas” (disciples), who sought his profound wisdom and compassionate guidance. He was particularly renowned for his insightful discourses on foundational Hindu texts, including the Bhagwat Maha Puran, Sant Tulsidas Ramayan, Srimad Bhagwat Gita and the Shiv Maha Puran. His influence also extended through his family connections: his niece, Shrimatie Gangadaye, was married to the illustrious Pandit Jankie Persad Sharma of Debe, and he was the beloved Mamoo (maternal uncle) of the respected Pandit Bal Gangadhar of Debe.

When Ramnarine “Babna” Pandit passed away in 1974, he left behind an indelible mark on his family, his devoted followers, and the broader spiritual community of Trinidad. His profound contributions to the impartation of Hindu knowledge and his unwavering compassionate guidance continue to resonate, securing his lasting legacy as a true guiding light.
