Nazeer Mohammed
Ustad Nazeer Mohammed stands among the early pioneers of Indian orchestral music in Trinidad and Tobago. A gifted musician, visionary band leader, and cultural stalwart, he played a fundamental role in shaping the development of Indian music within the nation’s cultural landscape. In the early 1940s, he founded the legendary Naya Zamana Indian Orchestra in Port of Spain, one of the first organized Indian orchestras in Trinidad and Tobago. Under his leadership, the orchestra quickly gained prominence for its masterful renditions of Indian film music and classical-inspired compositions. The ensemble became a major force in preserving and promoting Indian musical traditions while also adapting them to the cultural environment of the Caribbean. As the founding leader of the orchestra, Nazeer Mohammed brought together some of the most talented singers and musicians of the era. The orchestra featured and accompanied many celebrated artistes including Taran Persad, Jhagroo Qawwal, Champa Devi, and other distinguished performers who helped define the golden age of Indo-Trinidadian musical entertainment. Through the Naya Zamana Orchestra, Mohammed helped introduce audiences across the country to a refined orchestral style of Indian music. The group became known for its discipline, professionalism, and commitment to live musical performance. Their appearances at concerts, cultural events, weddings, and stage productions left a lasting impression on generations of music lovers and aspiring artistes. During his tenure as band leader, the orchestra performed alongside many outstanding artistes including Taran Persad, Narsaloo Ramaya, Champa Devi, King Ratiram, Mayodeen Ackbarali, Rhoda Asgarali, Jaggernauth Singh, Sonny Chadi, Sonny Ramadhin, S. M. Aziz, Ganga Persad, Jhagroo Qawal, Maestro Harry Mahabir, Fred Seebalack, Hardeo Maharaj, and numerous other accomplished singers and musicians. These collaborations helped establish the orchestra as one of the most respected musical institutions in Trinidad and Tobago. Beyond his musical excellence, Nazeer Mohammed was widely admired for his humility, discipline, and high standards. Many musicians who later achieved recognition in the field of Indian music passed through the ranks of the Naya Zamana Orchestra, benefiting from the musical guidance and leadership he provided. Though he has passed on to the great beyond, the legacy of Ustad Nazeer Mohammed continues to resonate through the rich musical traditions he helped establish.
