Mehdi Hassan
Mehdi Hassan, the undisputed Ghazal King, was born in 1927 in Luna, State of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. He was born into a distinguished family of musicians whose lineage was deeply rooted in the classical traditions of the Indian subcontinent. From an early age he was surrounded by music and received his initial training from his father, Ustad Azeem Khan, who carefully guided him in various classical styles of singing and the disciplined art of vocal performance. These early years of rigorous training helped shape the remarkable voice and musical depth that would later captivate audiences around the world.
After the partition of India in 1947, the family migrated to Pakistan where Mehdi Hassan gradually established himself as one of the most respected and admired vocalists of his generation. Through dedication, perseverance and extraordinary talent, he rose to prominence and became widely celebrated for his mastery of the Ghazal form. Over the years he lent his voice to numerous Pakistani films and recordings, earning widespread admiration for his deeply expressive style, flawless diction and unique ability to convey profound emotion through song.
Ustad Mehdi Hassan popularized many unforgettable renditions such as “Ranjish Hi Sahi”, “Mujhe Tum Nazar Se Gira To Rahe Ho”, “Duniya Kisi Ke Pyar Mein”, “Rafta Rafta Woh Meri”, and countless other timeless compositions that continue to resonate with listeners across generations. His performances were marked by exceptional control, subtle classical ornamentation and a soulful depth that set him apart as one of the finest interpreters of Ghazal music.
The great singer graced many of the major international stages across the world, performing before distinguished audiences and music lovers from diverse cultures. Fortunate indeed were the people of Trinidad and Tobago to have witnessed him performing live, an experience that left a lasting impression on all who attended. His beautiful renditions have captured the hearts of many Heads of State, dignitaries and devoted fans throughout the world.
We at Hindisongstt are very saddened at the passing of this great legend. Mehdi Hassan passed away at a hospital in Karachi on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at the age of 84. The undisputed Ghazal King had captured the hearts of fans across the globe with his extraordinary voice and unmatched artistry.
