King Ratiram

King Ratiram

Rambachan Ratiram, affectionately known as King Ratiram, was born in Grants Trace, Rousillac, to Lutchmin and Ramroop Ratiram. Music flowed naturally through his bloodline. His father, a respected Indian singer in Trinidad, was known for rendering countless Bhajans and skillfully playing the Khanjiri. Their home was filled daily with melodies from a gramophone spinning treasured 78 RPM records, creating an atmosphere that deeply shaped young Ratiram’s destiny.

As a boy, he became captivated by the voices of K. L. Saigal, K. C. Dey, and Mohammed Rafi. Listening intently and repeatedly, he carefully studied their songs until he could render them with striking emotion and authenticity. Determined to perfect his craft, he gradually learnt Hindi, enriching both his pronunciation and expression. Before long, he was singing throughout his village and neighboring districts, quickly becoming a household name admired for his powerful and captivating voice.

While performing with the Dadbal Narayan Sangeet Saaj Orchestra, his remarkable talent caught the attention of Carl Gookool, who invited him to join the S.M. Aziz Orchestra, all at the tender age of fifteen. Around this time, he also recorded with Radio Trinidad, where his innovative style and rich vocals won the hearts of listeners across the nation. He later sang with Naya Tarana, enjoying successful performances in Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana, and went on to spend approximately fifteen years as a leading member of the ever-popular Naya Zamana Orchestra.

One of the most distinguished moments of his career came in 1962, when he performed for Her Majesty The Queen of England and The Prince of Wales at the first Trinidad and Tobago Independence Day celebrations, a proud milestone not only for him, but for the nation he represented.

Throughout his life, King Ratiram’s voice remained a cherished treasure. Whether at Mandirs, weddings, or special occasions, hearing him sing was always a rare and joyous blessing.

With immense sadness, on 16th June, this gifted son of the soil departed this earthly realm. His passing marks not an end, but a sacred transition, the Atma continuing its divine journey under the grace of the Almighty. Though his physical voice has fallen silent, the Bhajans, film songs, and melodies he gifted to generations will forever echo in the hearts of those he touched. May his soul attain eternal peace at the lotus feet of the Divine, and may his legacy continue to inspire devotion and cultural pride for years to come.
