Dev Bansraj Ramkissoon
Dev Bansraj Ramkissoon was born in 1951 in Tarouba Village, growing up in the vibrant community of Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago. From his earliest days, music flowed naturally through him, guided lovingly by his father, Sonny Ramkissoon, whose versatility as a singer and musician shaped Dev’s first lessons in vocal discipline and harmonium.
At just 17 years old, he captured national attention by winning the Independence Celebration Championship Indian Singing Competition in 1967, a proud moment not only for him, but for his country. His musical foundation was strengthened under the guidance of Ustad Jhagroo Kawal, and in 1968 he earned a prestigious scholarship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (I.C.C.R) to further his studies in India.
Brother to the well-known singer and musician Hansraj Ramkissoon, Dev continued to expand his musical reach across the U.K., Canada, the U.S.A., Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana, and beyond. Today, based in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, he remains an internationally acclaimed Guru, musician, singer, and composer. Alongside his wife Zaira Ann, he founded Saaz-O-Awaaz Academy of Indian Music, where he continues to pass on the sacred traditions of Indian Classical Music.
As father to the renowned tabla maestro Dave Bansraj Jr., his legacy lives not only in recordings of Classical Music, Bhajans, and Ghazals, but in generations of students and listeners whose hearts he continues to inspire.
