Rajdai Sookraj

Rajdai Sookraj was born on July 4, 1947, in Cunupia to Sookraj and Patiya, in a family deeply rooted in Indian music and culture. Surrounded by rhythm and melody from an early age, she was inspired by her parents and grew alongside her talented siblings, the ever-popular Bissoon Sookraj, the dynamic Sagar Sookraj, and Trinidad & Tobago’s singing sensation Polly Sookraj.

At just 15 years old, Rajdai began performing publicly with her brothers Sagar and Bissoon, quickly earning admiration for her powerful classical renditions, traditional folk songs, and captivating Bhojpuri selections. She graced stages across the nation, delivering memorable performances in the Island-Wide National Ladies Singing Competition and the Independence Day Competition of Trinidad and Tobago.

A true pioneer, Rajdai became the first female Indian Classical drummer in Trinidad & Tobago to gain widespread recognition, often accompanying her versatile brother Sagar on the dholak. Her artistry broke barriers and inspired many young women to step confidently onto the musical stage.

As leader of the Bharat Sangeet Orchestra for many years, she helped shape and elevate Indian music locally. Her successful tours to Jamaica and Suriname broadened her reach, and audiences still fondly recall the friendly “Clash of the Titans” between Rajdai and Surinamese idol Dropati. She also partnered with the legendary Lily Ramcharan to produce the acclaimed LP “Songbirds of Trinidad & Tobago,” a cherished musical treasure.

Rajdai Sookraj continued to enchant audiences with her soulful voice and magnetic presence until her passing on May 21, 2023. She leaves behind a legacy of excellence, devotion, and sterling contribution to the growth and preservation of Indian music in Trinidad & Tobago.
