Rajmanee Maharaj
Born in Trinidad and Tobago to parents Ram and Phulo Singh, Rajmanee Maharaj is regarded as one of the foremost and most beloved vocalists to emerge from the island. From a very tender age, her life was surrounded by devotion, music, and tradition. At just ten years old, she began singing Bhajans and participating at Ramayan Satsangs alongside her grandfather and uncle, a spiritual and musical foundation that she continued to nurture until she was twenty years old.
Her musical journey took a decisive turn after she married her beloved husband Ramesh Maharaj, who immediately recognized the beautiful and powerful voice she possessed. With his encouragement and support, Rajmanee took the important step toward developing her talent, a decision that would soon blossom into a remarkable singing career. She soon made her mark performing with the Triveni Indian Orchestra, where audiences were captivated by her sweet, melodious voice and graceful stage presence. Rajmanee sings with a natural ease and effortless charm that places her in a class of her own, winning admiration wherever she performs.
In 1983, she entered the popular Mastana Bahar Competition in Trinidad and Tobago. With her mesmerizing performance, she outshone the competition and proudly captured first prize at the grand finals. Two years later, in 1985, she once again demonstrated her remarkable vocal ability when she entered the National Ladies Singing Competition, where she was victorious once more, securing the coveted first prize.
While Rajmanee’s musical achievements have brought her much recognition, she considers her greatest accomplishment to be her family. She is the proud mother of three wonderful children, Sita, Sunita, and Sunil, who remain a cherished part of her life and inspiration. Rajmanee’s musical inspiration and lifelong idol has always been the legendary playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, whose influence can be felt in the sweetness, purity, and emotional depth of her singing.
Throughout her career, this gifted and admired artiste has shared the stage with many distinguished performers from India, the Caribbean, and beyond. Among the celebrated artistes she has performed alongside are the legendary Udit Narayan, the revered Bhajan singer Hari Om Sharan, the renowned “Bhajan Samraat” Anup Jalota, Jojo Mukherjee (Bengali Singer) as well as Devindra Pooran, Shiraz Walli, Ajith Kumar Isac, Maestro Harry Mahabir, Harold Boodoo, Ramesh Maraj, Karamchand Maharaj, Janet Naipaul, Narindra Ramdular, Sharma Ramdular, Lalchand “Rafi” Singh, Narie Mahabir, and many other respected artistes. Her enchanting voice and heartfelt delivery have consistently charmed audiences, leaving them deeply moved and thoroughly delighted.
Today, Rajmanee Maharaj resides in Canada with her family, where she continues to share her music with devotion and passion. She remains actively involved in Satsang and Ramayan groups, cultural programmes, charity events, and community gatherings. A naturally gifted performer with a divine and captivating voice, she continues to inspire admiration and affection wherever she sings. Rajmanee Maharaj stands proudly among the sweetest and most graceful singers to originate from the small island of Trinidad and Tobago. Through her voice, humility, and dedication to music and devotion, she has touched the hearts of countless listeners across generations.
