Kailash Kowlessar
From the quiet village of Ramai Trace, Debe, a legend emerged. Born Kailash Kowlessar on February 6, 1954, he inherited a legacy of artistry from his grandfather, sculptor Sidhoo Jagan, but it was his voice that would define his destiny. His journey began at 26 with Pandit Rampersad Tiwari (Darhi Baba) Ramayan Group from Debe, South Trinidad, but it was in 1996 that this star truly ascended. His mesmerizing rendition of “Suna Suna Lage” at the Mastana Bahar Grand Finals didn’t just win him the first prize; it cemented his place in musical history.
He dominated Mohammed Rafi Competitions, his performances so riveting that he clinched the top spot not once, but twice. Kailash wasn’t confined to one stage; he graced performances with legendary bands like Dil-E-Nadan led by the great Ramnarine (Tole) Moonilal and the BWIA National Indian Orchestra led by the legendary Maestro Harry Mahabir his voice soaring across continents during successful tours to Canada, the USA, Suriname, and Guyana.
In 1996, Kailash and his dear friend Premchand Jagdeo delivered heartfelt performances as invited guests for the Divali concert hosted by the Pickering Devi Mandir, Canada, with all proceeds directly supporting the Mandir. Their performance left a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of all present.
On October 15th, 1999, a profound wave of sorrow swept across Trinidad and Tobago as news broke of the passing of the beloved and gifted artiste Kailash Kowlessar. His departure marked the end of an era for many who had grown up inspired by his powerful voice and commanding presence.
For years, his music had been a wellspring of joy, solace, and cultural pride, resonating deeply within the hearts of his audience. Whether on stage or in devotional settings, Kailash gave of himself wholeheartedly, leaving an indelible impression wherever he performed. Though his earthly journey concluded far too soon, the melodies he so passionately rendered continue to echo timelessly, preserving his legacy in the cherished memories of all who were blessed to witness his remarkable gift.
