Rana Mohip

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, talented Rana Mohip began playing the harmonium and singing bhajans at the age of nine and later defined himself as one of Trinidad's leading musicians. In 1987, he received a scholarship to pursue Hindustani Classical Music in India. He started his initial training at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, under the guidance of its Principal Pt. Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya. He completed his Bachelors Degree and his Masters Degree whilst studying in India. He also learnt tabla for five years under Guru Kulbushan Bhargava. While in India, he performed at many prestigious Music Festivals such as the Vishnu Digambar Jayanti, Sankat Mochan Festival (Banaras), Swatcha Ganga Utsav, Chandigarh Sangeet Sammelaan and numerous others. In addition, he had been featured regularly on all India radio and television stations. Shri Rana Mohip had the honor to perform alongside many renowned artistes of India including Pt. Jasraj, Anup Jalota, Hari Om Sharan and many others. As an accomplished musician he has toured extensively in India, Canada, New York, London, Suriname and Guyana. After having four years of teaching experience at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, India, he co-founded the SANGEET MAHAVIDYALAYA upon his return to Trinidad. He has also composed music for dance dramas, dance items, music cassettes and artistes both of India and Trinidad. In 1995, he performed with the Samaroo Jets Steel Orchestra as a tabla accompanist at the Sri Sathya Sai World Music Conference, India and has been on cultural exchanges to Guadeloupe, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Barbados. He is the director and co- founder of Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. He has recorded three CD'S that reflects his moods and mastery in music, Sai Bhajans in 2002, Divine Echoes in 2002 and Khushiyan in 2006. In 2006 he launched his Orchestra the SARGAM INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRA. In August 2010 he trained and conducted a 120 member choir and a 21 piece orchestra at a divine offering to Bhagavan Sri Satya Sai Baba in India. At present he is a Senior Instructor of Music at the Academy for the Performing Arts at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. (Copyright Hindisongstt 2023).
