INTRODUCTION
The word sanskaar is derived from the Sanskrit word "Sanskrghan". It means religious purificatory rites and ceremonies from sanctifying the body, mind and intellect of an individual, so that he may become a fully integrated member of the community.
Hindu Sanskaars also combine a number of rites, regulations and observations aimed at purifying, sanctifying, refining and perfecting the individual.
These Sanskaars are ceremonies and domestic rites based on traditions and popular usages. They are of great significance and social importance because of their association with conception, marriage and funeral or cremation rites.
The sixteen sanskaars are divided under five major headings
1) Pre-natal Sanskaars - three
2) Sanskaars of childhood - six
3) Educational Sanskaars - two
4) Vivaaha Sanskaar - Four
5) Antyesthi Sanskaar - one.
Sanskaars, therefore are intended to be a guide to the stages of development of an individual from birth to death.
Antyesthi Sanskaar is the final stage of life, when the life leaves the body which becomes useless and lifeless. This body then has to be buried or cremated after the final rites are performed. Obviously, in the case of Antyesthi Sanskaar there would be some exceptions where additional rites are included, especially is death occurs impromptu as in accidents, suicides, homicides or other unusual circumstances beyond control.
Nevertheless, every human being born with that spark of divinity should be able to identify his origin, his manifestation, his stages of development during his lifetime and according to his karma or actions, should have a fair idea of where his soul will be heading after this mundane existence.
Hence it is our option to make the most of this puzzle of life that is human existence. The reason why I have given a general overview of the sanskaars is to highlight how short life can be. We must not waste it, but use it wisely; so that it can help us to attain moksha or liberation in the hereafter, as specified in many of our holy scriptures such as Ramcharitramaanas and Bhagavad Gita. Human birth is a special gift to mankind and we should not only focus solely on materialistic things as house, car, land, money and sensual enjoyment but also we should use it to assist development of mankind. Additionally we should pave the way for us to attain our own liberation, when we have come to the end of our holiday on planet earth.
This book is a collection of 140 specially selected songs for Antyesthi Sanskaar or funeral rites. It has been my fervent desire to compile these songs to assist our pundits, devotional and other singers who are desirous of enhancing the celebration of life of our dearly beloved relatives and friends who have departed this life. These inspirational songs can also be used on other occasions and serve as a reminder to mankind that he should try to live a righteous life in preparation of his own future. Certainly everyone has to travel this same road one day.
Most of these tunes are quite popular and easy to remember and can also be sung at bhandaaras, or death anniversaries, pitri paksh programmes and pitri yajnas. However with the assistance of my brother Budram Holass, I will try as much as possible to make available these tunes on Cd's so everyone can learn them and sing them when necessary.
